Prostitution beckons India's former bar girls

The main point for closing the Mumbai’s dance bars is reducing the problem of gender roles. Gender seem be a severe problem in most developing countries, such as Mumbai, the business and entertainment capital of India. Men cannot control women or lower ranked women making a decent living. For example, when women are pity being prostitutes as being selling their bodies for earning money to support their families. We live in the 21st century, these kind of defined gender roles cannot be accept and just ludicrous. First of all, not all the women willing work as prostitutes. Money to support their family can be a big issue for women work as prostitutes. Maybe the society didn’t give women other opportunity jobs to earn money. Supporters of closing down the bars believe that the atmosphere is conducive for men to tease girls or to book girls for prostitution. So, basically, it’s bad for men to tease girls but it is alright for men to go into brothels and rape teenage girls that are enslaved as sex workers.  This makes their logic completely contradicting each other.  Even though the dance bar owners are fighting the ban in the state’s high court because they say it’s the dancer’s right to earn a living, they are most likely fighting to keep the bar open with cash pouring in for themselves.

  1. Yes, rape is wrong, and yes women deserve equal rights and equal opportunities. However, that is just the opinion of western culture. People in places like Mumbai could say the same things about our society and culture. They could ask "Why western women have rights" and give a slew of reasons why they believe their way is correct, and really, they wouldn't be wrong. It's all based on culture and opinion. No one gave anyone basic human rights, it's merely a concept (a really good one that I believe wholeheartedly in) but it is not a universal law.

  2. Women’s rights are a dispute throughout all regions of the world. Equalizing rights and providing a voice for females is one way to improve their standard of living. Although it is a process that will not happen overnight, the benefits that will arise are vital in creating gender equality. Having control over one’s self will prevent a future of women living in inferiority to men.

  3. Maharashtra state's High Court is not allowing strip teases at bars. This on a social level is a great because girls will no longer be pressure to dance sexually for money from men. However, this does negatively impact many families income. Because the women and girls can no longer dance at clubs they lose income effecting not only their health but their families’ health as well. Maharashtra needs to find a way to have girls be respected but still earn a living.

  4. Gender roles has been an ongoing issue that many western countries have been trying to fight. However, we still see many dance bars even in the US. To attack the gender role issue, Mumbai should be going bottom up, not top down. The government should be trying to identify brothels and prevent such organizations from forming instead of spending their efforts on closing down dance bars. The women in dance bars that have no other option for income may just sink lower since they lose that better option.
